Our portable dishwasher broke about a week ago. It was given to us second-hand by a family who didn't need it anymore, we had it for almost a year, and then it died. We're still trying to decide whether it's worth having it looked at, but the thing is so old that the right parts probably aren't available anymore, anyway.
So I've been back to washing everything by hand. It's not too bad. Though, it would have been horribly stressful trying to handwash everything when I had a newborn. But now that Zac is almost 6 months old and better at entertaining himself, I have a little more time on my hands than I did before.
Anyway. Being without a dishwasher got me thinking about modern conveniences, and which ones I would choose to keep, and which ones I would be willing to go without if I had to:
Necessities: oven/stove; refrigerator/freezer; clothes washer and dryer (don't need the dryer for everything, but I have to have it to dry diapers and towels or I just worry that they don't get clean enough); telephone; electricity and running water in general; a car (when it's cold)
Can do without: dishwasher (obviously); microwave oven; television; computer and internet (wouldn't want to give it up, but I could); disposable diapers, napkins, paper towels, and other disposable products-- in fact, I hardly ever use dispoable stuff anymore if I can help it (though they are handy at times); a car (when it's warm)
