We have a future avid reader, I think...

Gabe has always loved it when we read to him, but lately he'll sit down with a book he's familiar with and "read" all by himself. It's wonderfully exciting, both because he's doing something independently, and also because he's showing so much interest in reading.

He loves to learn about letters. I think he probably recognizes most-- if not all-- letters by sight now. And then last night, he simply floored me when...

...We were at the in-laws' downstairs in the office. Gabe spotted a long plastic tube on the floor in the shape of an "S." He said "Look, it's a "S!" Then, after contemplating for several seconds, added, "It makes a "sss" sound!"

So he's figured out that different letters make different sounds! And I don't remeber teaching him about that concept at all yet, so I'm pretty sure he has mostly figured it out on his own.

I was having doubts about possibly introducing him to sight words next month when he turns three, but now I think he is totally ready.

:D
