So I've been doing some "school" with Gabe since he turned three. For the most part, he gets excited to check his "mail" (he has a little mailbox) and find out what our letter of the week is going to be, and our word of the day each day. For each word of the day, I try to have some sort of easy craft prepared, or at least something to color (but he's not much into coloring).
The first day, I introduce the "letter of the week." I found this resource online http://www.apples4theteacher.com/coloring-pages/interactive-alphabet/, with letters to color; and these coloring pages http://www.apples4theteacher.com/coloring-pages/interactive-alphabet/ with tracing letters and a few things that start with that letter. We talk about what sound the particular letter makes, and different words that start with that letter.

After we finish a coloring page or a craft, Gabe has a binder with sheet protectors, and we put everything into his "book." He likes to get this out every now and then and look at all the crafts he's done and we talk together about the letters and words he's learned.
Sometimes, though, he gets a little confused. Yesterday, he was reviewing his book, and came across this page:

He starts out saying, "This is the letter G!" Then, G is for...goat, boy, duck, and fence!"
So this week our letter is"K," and our first "word of the day" was "kick." To illustrate this, I printed out a picture of a girl kicking a ball. But now, Gabe insists that "ball begins with k!" Even though B was just our letter of the week a couple weeks ago...*sigh*
He'll work it all out eventually, right?
Argh! I keep forgetting to title my posts...
ReplyDeleteAlphabet books are terrible for ambiguous pictures, too, just like your worksheet. The show a telephone for 'T' even though every little kid says 'phone', they show an airplane for 'A' when most kids just say plane.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't worry about it too much. I've thought about putting together my own book, with pictures easily named by my son, and the letter that goes with that initial sound. That way I can even have two pages for "G", "C", and all the vowels, since they make two common sounds each. And I think I would put fox or ax for x, because knowing xylophone teaches no child anything about phonics.
Have you tried making up your own pages on the computer?
Lisa, I agree. When we get to "x" I am using words like "fox" and "box." Like you said, it's more important to learn the phonics. And with the G and C...so far, we've done the hard G sound...later down the road I will introduce the soft "G" as if it were a separate letter. We haven't done C as yet...I dread it, becuase it's soooo ambiguous. C can just go jump off a kliff for all I kare...lol
